KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 2): No Malaysian was detained at the United States' John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

It said this in a statement issued in response to a report by a local news portal that a traveller from Malaysia wes among 71 detained at the New York airport following a seven-nation travel blacklist issued by new US President Donald Trump.

The report, however, had noted that it was unknown at the time if the traveller is a Malaysian or a foreigner who was caught after exiting Malaysia.

The ministry said it has confirmed with the consulate general in New York that no Malaysian has been detained at the JFK Airport.

Malaysia is also not among countries whose citizens are banned from entering the US, the ministry said.

"The ministry has clarified with the Embassy of the United States of America in Kuala Lumpur that the travel ban does not include Malaysia and her citizens. Malaysians who have valid travel documents and necessary visas are allowed to enter the United States," it said.

Trump's travel ban affects people from Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Syria. It is reportedly also tripping up people who are already legal residents of the US or visa holders.

With the ban, Trump also suspended refugee immigration programmes.
