KUALA LUMPUR (April 11): Over 69,000 Facebook users had taken the online poll launched by Proton Holdings Bhd on its Facebook page inviting the public to vote for the name of its first sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the first nine days.

"As of Wednesday (April 11), over 69,000 Facebook users had taken the poll while the video that is posted with it has been viewed more than 165,000 times.

"Over 1,000 people also shared the content on their own personal pages, thus increasing the potential reach of the exercise," according to a statement issued on Proton's website today.

Proton's sales and marketing vice president Abdul Rashid Musa said the group does not expect such a big number of responses in such a short time.

"The new SUV is a significant milestone for Proton and therefore we wanted to share it with our fellow Malaysians as it also represents a symbol of national achievement.

"We feel humbled by the interest shown in the first premium C-segment SUV produced by a Malaysian automotive brand," he said.

To that, RM100,000 worth of gift vouchers will be shared among participants as a token of appreciation.

"Five winners will also be chosen based on the best reasons given for the name they have voted and their prize package will be a 'money-can't-buy' experience consisting of exclusive VIP invites to the launch as well as the honour of being among the first people to test drive and experience the technology and advanced features of the SUV at Proton's test track in Shah Alam," the statement read.

There is also the option of proposing an alternative name for the SUV. Should the alternative name be picked, one lucky winner will be rewarded with a 4D/3N tour package to Hangzhou and Shanghai in China for two, inclusive of a visit to the headquarters of China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Company Ltd.

The SUV will be equipped with some of the most technologically advanced features like smart voice recognition, a 360-degree 3D camera and a host of advanced safety features, like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency brake assist.

"The first product jointly developed with our partner Geely will be the starting point of a new model range for the company so we want as many people as possible to get up close and take a look at the future of Proton," he added.
