KUALA LUMPUR (July 9): The police are investigating Top Glove Corp Bhd for allegedly moving 1,606 workers out of their dormitories in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, to eight hotels, prior to the imposition of the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) there, according to a report by Malaysiakini.

The news portal wrote that local authorities had instructed Top Glove to cease operations with immediate effect, amid the probe.

Quoting Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed, it said the police have identified the eight hotels that Top Glove allegedly used as transit accommodation for their migrant workers.

The workers have been barred from leaving the hotels, the police chief told a press conference today.

"A total of 1,606 workers were taken to eight hotels from their hostels at Weslite in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, prior to the implementation of the targeted MCO.

"We have opened an investigation (paper) under Section 270 of the Penal Code over their action," Arjunaidi was quoted as saying.

He added that the workers have been screened for Covid-19, with results pending.

Top Glove, meanwhile, was quoted as saying it was cooperating with authorities on the matter.

The news portal also wrote that a woman had, via a viral video, previously claimed that the increase in Covid-19 cases in Selangor was due to a glove factory moving its migrant workers to Klang hotels from their hostels in Petaling Jaya.

Klang and Petaling Jaya are among the districts in Selangor placed under the July 3-July 16 EMCO.

Top Glove shares rose 10 sen or 2.7% today to close at RM3.82 apiece, giving it a market capitalisation of RM31.35 billion.
