A mysterious enchantment always seems to linger around pre-war abodes, and when they are given a polish without being stripped of its old charm, they can be so inviting.

This is one of the major allures of Burps & Giggles, which prides itself in its setting within a colonial-era building in Jalan Sultan Yusuff, Ipoh old town. Once occupied by a dressmaker’s store and an antique collector’s lair, traces of its origins are still conspicuous, as the dated facade has been left mostly untouched.

Within its walls, Burps’ unique mix of old-world charm and contemporary zing welcomes visitors to enjoy and explore the preserved premises with fun furnishing from DIY lampshades, repurposed old materials as furniture and other whacky ideas to create a hipster-rustic and yet cosy cafe. As an added perk, guests also get to admire the marvellous murals by homegrown talents such as the popular Marilyn Monroe stencils.

Originally an Australian-inspired cafe started by Dexter, Rachel and Julie Song in 2012, this whimsical piece of business was eventually handed over to an equally unusual pair, Amanda Teoh and Claire Thoo in 2017.

“I am from the medical research field, whereas my aunt Claire is a gifted artist and crafter. Her creations are mainly featured in Ipoh Craftnerds, which is located just behind Burps in the Kong Heng Square,” Teoh shares.

“And of course we have a wholesome and hearty menu. Freshness and natural produce is our priority, no MSG and artificial colouring is our principle.

Even the Burps’ menus are creative pieces to behold as they are “handwritten and drawn by our lovely aunt Claire. Each set is unique and different”, Teoh stresses.

“What matters to us is to maintain this lovely and cosy ambience to ensure folks from all over feel comfortable and at the same time get a dose of astonishment. Burps’ crew is always friendly and ready to help.

“For a first-timer, it would be great to go for our burgers, with a choice of Jammy Beef, Greeko Lamb or Poulet Chicken. This goes perfect along with a cup of tantalising and refreshing fruit tea. Bon appétit!” Teoh enthuses.
