(September 25): With their relationship strained following the Selangor menteri besar tussle, PKR Youth has asked PAS to review its position within Pakatan Rakyat.

PKR Youth deputy chief Dr Afif Bahardin said Pakatan was the best formula to face Barisan Nasional (BN) and there was not much time left until the 14th general election.

"There are many in PAS who want to remain in the coalition. This is something PAS has to resolve internally.

"There is not much time. We have to get ready for the next general elections," he said when asked to comment on PAS Youth vice-chief Mohd Khairil Nizam Khiruddin, who said that the Islamist party might leave the coalition when the time was right, although it would not be in the near future.

Dr Afif downplayed the remark, saying that it was probably Khairil's personal opinion.

The Seberang Jaya assemblyman and Penang health exco said the Pakatan formula was still the best to face BN in the coming polls as there are many young leaders in the coalition.

"This formula has led us to the achievements we are proud of today."

Dr Afif said in a nation that was heading towards a two-party system, there has to be cooperation, honesty, mutual understanding, and 'musyawarah' (consultation).

"We need to have these values in the leadership and also in the grassroot. Only then Pakatan will be a strong force in facing BN."

Malay daily Sinar Harian reported that Khairil had said: "Our patience has a limit, and I am confident and believe that when the time comes for us to leave Pakatan Rakyat, we will leave."

"History has shown that those who normally leave the coalition is not PAS, but our allies," he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily today, while referring to the defunct Barisan Alternatif, which ended when the DAP pulled out in 2001.

Khairil also described PKR and DAP as stubborn, and urged PAS to be patient since it was a party that has been around for a long time.

"Our principle is that when the time comes, if we should leave, we will leave. But now is not the time. We will remain loyal to Pakatan Rakyat. Umno should be wary of us once we are in Putrajaya."
