KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has cautioned the public not to fall prey to phishing websites that have been illegally using names and images of its president and group chief executive officer for endorsement purposes.

In a statement today, Petronas said the group has been made aware of fake stories of Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin launching new cryptocurrency technology platforms for Malaysians, promising huge profits upon a US$250 investment.

The article, entitled “Petronas Launches New Scheme With 18 Partners. This Can Make You Rich!”, was accompanied by photographs allegedly depicting Wan Zulkiflee speaking about the investment platforms.

The article was shared on a number of technology investment platforms including “Crypto Revolt” and “Bitcoin Revolution”.

“We wish to alert members of the public that this is an ongoing scam. The website used a recent media event by Petronas to launch a vendor development programme with various industry partners, designed to raise the capabilities of local firms in the oil and gas sector.

“Petronas, or any of its subsidiaries and employees within the Group of Companies, are not affiliated in any way, and do not support or endorse the alleged promotion,” it stressed.
