KUALA LUMPUR (May 14): A total of 8.23 million passengers, or 0.6% more than a year ago, passed through the 39 airports Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) operates in Malaysia, in April this year.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the airport operator said the slight increase was due to a higher base in April 2017, when it saw a 17.1% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth — the highest growth recorded for a month in 2017.

Meanwhile, the international passenger volume recorded a 5% y-o-y increase to 5.08 million passengers in April 2018, but was offset by a 3.9% decline in domestic traffic to 3.9 million passengers.

Overall aircraft movements also increased by 3.3% y-o-y, with international movements up 8.4% while domestic movements rose 0.3% over April 2017.

Out of this, passenger traffic at KLIA Main Terminal fell 2.4% y-o-y to 2.37 million from 2.43 million, which was offset by klia2's 6.7% increase in traffic to 2.71 million in April 2018 from 2.54 million in April 2017.

Systemwide including its Istanbul operations in Turkey, MAHB handled 3.4% more passengers at 11.11 million in April 2018 compared with 10.75 million a year ago.

In the first four months of 2018 (4M18), MAHB said airports in Malaysia registered a 2.9% growth in passenger volume to 32.66 million from the year-ago period. International traffic increased by 21.3%, while domestic traffic declined by 4.5%.

Aircraft movements grew by 1.6% y-o-y in 4M18.

KLIA passenger movements grew by 4.9% y-o-y to 20.08 million passengers in 4M18. Out of this, KLIA Main Terminal passenger movements declined by 1.7%, which was offset by the 11.2% increase in traffic at klia2 at 10.8 million passengers.

Systemwide including Istanbul SGIA, MAHB's airports recorded a growth of 6% y-o-y to 43.34 million passengers in 4M18. Total passenger traffic at Istanbul SGIA rose 16.7% to 10.68 million passengers in 4M18.

MAHB said the expected high increase in election movements through air travel did not take place in April 2018.

"In the 12th (2008) and 13th (2013) General Election, there was a continuous increments in traffic for several months towards election date and it continued for the following months. This was not obvious in 2018," it added.

MAHB shares closed 32 sen or 3.62% lower at RM8.53 today, with 11.06 million shares traded, bringing a market capitalisation of RM14.04 billion.
