(Nov 19): Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has rejected an emergency motion filed by DAP's Sandakan MP Stephen Wong to discuss the beheading of Sarawakian Bernard Then by the Abu Sayyaf militant group.

Wong filed a motion under Standing Order 18 yesterday to discuss the death of Then, who is the first Malaysian to be killed by Abu Sayyaf.

But Pandikar today said the matter did not need to be discussed as Putrajaya had done its best to secure the release of Then, who was taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf on May 15 together with Sabah restaurant owner Thien Nyuk Fun.

Thien was released on Nov 9, but Abu Sayyaf beheaded Then after its ransom demand was not met.

Then was reportedly beheaded two days ago in the island of Jolo and a sack marked with his name has been found in the island.

“I know the speaker's decision is final, but I'm disappointed. We wanted to know why this happened," Wong said.

“The police were sure they could rescue him too. I'm not disputing the efforts taken by the police and authorities,” he added.
