Celebrating 50 years of a Finnish icon

The bright and irresistible hue of orange is inextricably linked not only to the prestige of Hermès’ immediately-recognisable packaging, but also to the beloved Fiskars scissors. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Finnish classic and international emblem of enduring design, quality and commitment has sold more than a billion pairs and served generations of makers, doers and creators the world over. The revolution changing the face of scissors forever happened in the 1960s, when clean designs and modular forms met with the plastic boom. Coupled with advancements in manufacturing, it brought about a plastic makeover and, in Fiskars’ case, a marvellous orange one. Experience the journey of the iconic orange-handled Scissors and view a special collection of novel art inspired by Fiskars’ signature colour and form at the Design Museum Helsinki. The exhibition runs until Oct 31. (www.designmuseum.fi)
