(May 11): A Sabah lawmaker has questioned the rationale behind the demand for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign, insisting that only a minority are critical of the prime minister's administration, Utusan Malaysia reported today.

Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh urged Umno members and leaders to unite and get rid of the "cancer" in the Malay ruling party.

"Our president is being insulted by irresponsible quarters. Why must he step down simply because one or two people are criticising him?

"If there is a cancer in Umno, we must do something about it. We cannot have any enemies hiding among us. Otherwise, the entire party will be destroyed," Ghapur was quoted as saying in the Umno mouthpiece.

He said Najib would continue to receive the support of party members and the public as the prime minister understood the needs of Malaysians.

"We will always support him. We are united and we know he cares for the people.

"He has never rejected any of our requests," Ghapur was quoted as saying.

He said this in front of a 40,000-strong crowd at a solidarity gathering organised by Kalabakan Umno in Padang Bandaran Tawau yesterday.

Yesterday, Najib told the same gathering that he would not bow to pressure to resign as prime minister and Umno president.

He said as long as the people and Umno members supported his leadership, he would not back down.

“I only bow down to party members and the people. As long as the party members support me, and as long as people give their trust, I shall continue to serve," national news agency Bernama quoted him as saying.
