BANGI (Sept 8): Pakatan Harapan (PH), which for the first time used its own logo,  won in the Balakong by-election today.

Prior to this,  the coalition had to use the logo of its component party PKR. The other component parties are Bersatu, DAP and Amanah.

PH’s candidate Wong Siew Ki, 32,  polled 22,508 votes to defeat MCA candidate Tan Chee Teong, 40, by a majority of 18,533 votes. Tan only managed to secure 3,975 votes.

This by-election also witnessed MCA, a component party of Barisan Nasional which lost in the 14th general election  on May 9, using its own logo for the first time instead of the BN’s logo.

The results were announced by Returning Officer for the Balakong by-election Datuk Rosli Othman at  Dewan Demesne, Hulu Langat Land and District Office at 9.30pm.

Also present was Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar.

The majority, however, was lower than that in the 14th general election for the State seat due to the very low voter turnout today.

The by-election was called due the death of the incumbent  Eddie Ng Tien Chee, of Pakatan Harapan, in a road accident on July 20.

In GE14,  Ng, from DAP but standing on a PKR ticket,  defeated Barisan Nasional’s  Lim Chin Wah and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali (PAS) by a majority of 35,538 votes.
