PETALING JAYA (June 13): Melaka will stop imposing parking fees on weekends and public holidays within the historic city centre – including tourist hubs – said state Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Tey Kok Kiew.

The collection of parking fees will cease from Friday (June 15), and cover tourist spots including Taman Melaka Raya, Bandar Hilir and Jonker Walk, he said in a report by The Star.

Some 14,115 parking bays under the Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB) will also stop charging parking fees from this Friday.

Tey said the decision was made at a state exco meeting in accordance with Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto.

The state currently collects fees within the city centre on the weekends at between RM0.40 and RM0.60 per hour, which is similar to the weekday rate.

He added that parking hours will be revised to 9am to 5pm from 8am to 6pm currently.

“[However], this parking fee exclusion is not applicable to private parking areas or the 12 privatised companies commissioned by MBMB such as the Melaka Sentral transitional market in Bachang, Tabung Haji Complex and Jalan Kota Museum,” he said.

Parking fees for private car park bays will be kept at RM0.40 for 30 minutes, RM0.60 for 60 minutes and RM5 for full-day parking.
