KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 7): Nestle (M) Bhd denied allegations of high sugar content in  its Milo product of as much as 40 per cent per serving.

Its Halal Affairs Committee chairman Othman Md Yusoff said if consumers’ intake of the beverage followed the suggested serving of five spoonfuls of Milo mixed with 200 millilitres of water, the sugar content would only be around six per cent.

"Forty per cent of sugar content (per serving) refers to the sugar content in the Milo powder before it is mixed with water. After water is added, the sugar level is only six per cent.

"From the six per cent, only three per cent comes from added sugar content, while three per cent is natural sugar from milk (lactose) that is found in powdered Milo,” he told  a press conference here yesterday.

He was commenting on a video of a social media activist that went viral recently, claiming that the Milo beverage had high sugar content.
