KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): The country's national debt was still categorised as "moderate debt", Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong told Parliament today.

“The total national debt as of end of March 2015 is RM596.8 billion or 52.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)," he said when responding to questions on the country’s external debt levels as of April this year.

Detailing the debts, Chua said 97% or RM579.2 billion was domestic debt and the remaining 3% or RM17.6 billion was from offshore loans.

He also noted that the government was fully committed to ensuring that the national debt will not surpass 55% of the GDP.
