KUALA LUMPUR (May 12): The travel ban on former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were due to valid complaints, according to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At a press conference today, Mahathir said it is true that it was him that gave the order to prevent Najib and Rosmah from leaving the country.

"It is true that I have prevented Najib from leaving, but apart from him and his wife, I am not aware of anybody else," he said.

"There are a lot of complaints against him, all of which have to be investigated, and we found that some of the complaints are valid, so we have to act quickly, because we don't want to be saddled with problem of extradition from other countries," he said.

Meanwhile, Mahathir also said he has given instructions to the Royal Malaysian Police to remove the Official Secret Act restrictions on the Auditor General Report on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

"In fact I have given instructions to police to remove the restriction by the Official Secret Act, placed on the Auditor General Report on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), they (the police) will then submit the report to me, and I will study in order to revisit (the case)," he said.

Asked about the fate of Attorney General (AG) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, Mahathir said at the moment, the country does not have an AG, indicating the removal of the head of public procecutor.

"We have placed certain restrictions on a number of people who maybe involve in wrongdoings or in making wrong decisions, so at the moment we don't have an Attorney General," he said, adding that the new government is considering the new candidate for AG replacement.

"We are considering names, but we have to study the suitability of the candidates, we can't just make a decision," he said.
