KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): The transport ministry says it is too early to quantify the cost savings after the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is abolished and a new agency called the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) is set up.

SPAD's disbandment, said the ministry, should contribute to savings in the government's financial allocations because the commission's functions can be taken over by existing agencies and officials.

"However, the amount of cost savings cannot be determined (yet), as the structural process has not been finalised," the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply to William Leong (PH-Selayang).

Leong wanted to know the cost and benefits of the government's decision to disband SPAD and establish APAD.

On June 6, the transport ministry said APAD will be spearheaded by a director-general to implement policies on the development of the land public transport sector in the country after SPAD's abolishment.

APAD will play its role in the planning and development of the land public transport sector, particularly in relation to rail transportation and bus systems.
