KUALA LUMPUR (June 8): Ministers, deputy ministers and political secretaries will be required to declare their assets to the prime minister.

This was decided at the Cabinet Select Committee on Anti-Corruption (JKKMAR) meeting today, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

However, he did not say whether this will start immediately.

"The prime minister cannot hide the information. The report will later be shared to the bodies responsible in curbing corruption," he told a news conference following the meeting.

"As such, the prime minister will not be able to hide any corrupt practice by government officials or civil servants," he added.

The JKKMAR also decided that a limit will be imposed on government officials, permitting them to hold no more than five positions in the government, its agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs). Currently, an official can hold up to 68 positions.

"Supposedly [an official] should only hold one position. But it cannot be avoided, [sometimes some] have to hold positions in GLCs," he said.

Dr Mahathir said the Barisan Nasional government did not impose a policy to limit the number of positions held by any civil servant. "Problems arise when it comes to contract awards by the government," he noted.

"(For example,) one company was awarded a contract to supply electricity to schools with an allocation of RM1 billion. The company received the money, but nothing was done at all (in relation to the works).

"There are many swindling [activities] that have resulted in loss of government funds," he added.
