KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 20): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), together with the Royal Malaysian Police, is investigating for a possible massive personal data breach that was advertised at a popular technology website and lifestyle blog, lowyat.net.

Following a report lodged with the authorities, MCMC said it has ordered the administrator of lowyat.net to remove a blog posting, which was said to put up an advertisement for an online sales of personal data belonging to millions of Malaysians.

“The administrator of the website has cooperated and removed the said advertisement, as well as the related article,” the MCMC said in a statement today.

“MCMC urges everyone not to speculate on this matter until the authorities complete the investigation,” the country’s internet regulator added.

Lowyat.net was reported to have announced that an unscrupulous party has put up an advertisement to sell personal data belonging to many million of Malaysians, which included customer names, billing addresses, mobile phone numbers, SIM (subscriber identity module) card numbers and MyKad (national identification) numbers of.

According to various reports, the personal data of many Malaysians advertised at lowyat.net were said to have been stolen from various sources, which include Jobstreet.com, Malaysian Medical Association and Malaysian Housing Loan Application, just to name a few.
