KUALA LUMPUR (June 8): Maybank Islamic Bhd has announced the appointment of lawyer Zainal Abidin as its chairman, effective June 1.
 
In a statement today, the bank said Zainal has been a director of Maybank Islamic since 2010 and previously served as chairman of Maybank Trustees Bhd.
 
Prior to that, Zainal was a director of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) from July 2009 to April 2014.
 
“He served as a member of the credit review committee, nomination and remuneration committee, and employees’ share scheme committee of the board.
 
“His other current directorship within the Maybank group is a director of Etiqa Takaful Bhd,” the statement added.
 
Zainal, 63, is a practicing corporate and commercial lawyer. As founder and senior partner, Zainal established a firm known as Zainal Abidin & Co in 1987.
 
“He also serves on the boards of Sime Darby Bhd, Sime Darby Property Bhd, Sime Darby Industrial Holdings Sdn Bhd and Lam Soon (M) Bhd,” Maybank Islmaic said.
