KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 6): The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will introduce a framework that links aeronautical revenues to customers' and stakeholders' satisfaction levels in 2017.

Mavcom said the measures and framework that will be implemented are a clear representation of its focus on a long-term and sustainable outcome for the aviation industry in Malaysia.

"The commission is eager to see the shaping of a more resilient industry in 2017, with significant growth and enhancements surrounding air passenger experience," it said in a statement on its outlook for 2017 today.

Mavcom said the framework is part of its various initiatives for 2017 that would see it heighten efforts around improving service levels at airports throughout the country.

"The commission will introduce measures to ensure airport operators remain committed and accountable for improving airport service levels and financial efficiency, for the benefit of air travellers in Malaysia," it added.

Mavcom, set up on March 1, 2016, under the Malaysian Aviation Commission Act 2015 to regulate economic and commercial matters relating to civil aviation, implemented the passenger service charges (PSC) for domestic travels and ASEAN destination in Malaysian airports, effective Jan 1, 2017.

It said the new ASEAN PSC tier, set lower than the PSC for ASEAN destinations currently in effect, is expected to enhance intra-regional connectivity and result in benefits around trade, investment, tourism and development.

"Aside from this, 2017 will see the first steps towards the PSC across all tiers at KLIA and klia2 being equalised and completed by 2018. Equalisation of the PSC at KLIA and klia2 is important for the industry to create a level playing field for all airline carriers operating at the two terminals," it reiterated.

Mavcom claimed that the new PSC rates remain among the most affordable in the world.

"We are confident that the decisions made around the PSC will not only safeguard consumer interests but also promote fair competition and ensure the airport operators continue to enhance their service levels," it added.
