NEW YORK (March 13): Maserati North America Inc. is recalling some of its Quattroporte and Ghibli luxury sedans because of danger posed by the driver-side floor mat, which can become dislodged and stuck in the accelerator.

“If the floor mat moves and becomes trapped between the accelerator and the vehicle carpet, it may result in very high vehicle speeds, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death,” the Italian automaker said in a notice posted Saturday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The flaw affects 28,235 cars manufactured from Feb. 1, 2013, to Nov. 30, 2015, according to the U.S. unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Maserati SpA.

The notice, which follows the October recall of about 984 of Maserati’s 2014 Quattroporte GTS V8 sedans because of fire risk, adds to the automaker’s challenges. Shipment volumes for the Maserati unit fell 11 percent in the fourth quarter in part because of a drop in Quattroporte sales in the U.S. and China, Richard Palmer, chief financial officer of Fiat Chrysler, said in a Jan. 27 conference call.

The Ghibli has a base price of $70,600 and a top speed of 163 miles (262 kilometers) per hour, while the Quattroporte starts at $99,900 and can reach 177 mph, according to Maserati’s website. The automaker will notify owners affected by the recall, and dealers will replace the driver’s floor mat -- and possibly the accelerator pedal -- at no cost, according to an NHTSA letter acknowledging the carmaker’s notification.

The recall is scheduled to begin on April 29.
