KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 20): Malaysia's inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), rose 4.3% in September from a year earlier mainly due to costlier transportation besides food and non-alcoholic drinks.

According to the Statistics Department statement today, the CPI's transportation segment increased 15.8% on costlier fuel while the food and non-alcoholic drinks group rose 4.6%.

Between January and September, the CPI increased 4% year-on-year (y-o-y), the department said. In monthly terms, September CPI climbed 0.3% from August, according to the department.

September CPI's 4.3% y-o-y rise was higher than August's 3.7% increase, the department said.
