KUALA LUMPUR (May 10): The key challenge for Malaysia’s incoming administration is to demonstrate that the new government can function well, says Julian Wee, an investment strategist at Credit Suisse in Singapore.
* Leaders including Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim are seasoned officials
* Both leaders are “also centrist and are not considered as radicals” and are fairly well known globally
* Ringgit and Malaysian equities will face downside pressure for now given uncertainties surrounding the transition of power and what policies the new government will adopt
* But over the medium term, Malaysia’s fundamentals remain robust
