KUALA LUMPUR (July 25): Contributions from Malaysians living abroad accounted for more than RM10 million of the RM162 million collected by Tabung Harapan Malaysia so far, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah said that as of yesterday, 289,002 people had donated to the fund, which the government set up as an official channel for the public to help the government to repay the nation's debts of RM1 trillion.

"Total online transactions to Tabung Harapan recorded since its inception (on May 30) to July 23 this year are 189,097," he added in reply to a question from Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang).

Amiruddin said that as of 3pm today, the fund has collected a total of RM162.33 million.

To an additional question by Fong as to whether the government will set a cut-off date for the collection of money for Tabung Harapan, Amiruddin said no expiry date has been fixed so far.
