KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 23): The Malaysian government will table a new Employment Insurance System (EIS) Bill in Parliament tomorrow after withdrawing the existing EIS Bill 2017 for the second time today.

In a statement today, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said the EIS, which involves insurance coverage for retrenched employees, will cover the private sector's estimated 430,000 employers and 6.6 million workers.

"The government is committed to implementing the Employment Insurance System in January 2018," Richard said.

The existing EIS Bill was tabled for first reading on Aug 1 this year. It was reported that the bill was initially withdrawn a week later.

Today, Riot said the scope of employment loss under the planned EIS include retrenchment, voluntary or mutual separation scheme (VSS/MSS), closure of company and business restructuring.

He said the new EIS Bill is expected to be tabled for second reading either on Wednesday or Thursday (Oct 25 or 26).
