KUALA LUMPUR (May 14): Malaysia marked the second-deadliest day of the Covid-19 pandemic with 34 deaths reported — a mere two days after it reported 39 fatalities, the highest daily toll yet since the onset of the pandemic in January last year.

The latest deaths pushed the total number of those who had succumbed to the coronavirus to 1,822 or 0.4% of all cases.

Meanwhile, 4,113 new cases of Covid-19 were reported today, bringing cumulative cases to 462,190. Only one case was imported.

This is the third consecutive day that cases remain above the 4,000-mark.

Selangor continued to lead in terms of new cases, with 1,269 new infections confirmed today, accounting for 30.85% of new cases nationwide.

Sarawak came in second, with cases jumping to 533 from 395 reported yesterday. Meanwhile, Kelantan chalked 371 new cases, followed by Johor with 335.

Meanwhile, number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 rose to 4,190 from 3,347 yesterday, bringing cumulative recoveries to 418,897 or 90.63% of all cases.

The number of active cases dipped to 41,470 as a result of recoveries overtaking new cases today.

However, the number of patients in intensive care increased slightly to 482, as did the number of those on respiratory assistance to 250.
