KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 11): Malaysia's industrial production index (IPI) rose 2.5% in November 2018 from a year earlier as manufacturing and electricity output increased, the Statistics Department said today.
In a statement today, the department's chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the IPI's manufacturing and electricity components increased 3.6% and 3.2% respectively.
"Meanwhile, the mining index declined by 0.7%," Mohd Uzir said.
According to the statement, manufacturing sector output expanded 3.6% in November 2018 after growing 5.4% in October.
"The major sub-sectors that contributed to the growth in November 2018 were: transport equipment and other manufacturing products (8.3%), electrical and electronic equipment products (5.3%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3.4%).
"Meanwhile, the mining sector output recorded a decline of 0.7% in November 2018 as compared to the same period of the previous year. This was due to a decrease in natural gas index (-1.8%) while crude oil index increased marginally by 0.6%," it said.
In October 2018, the IPI grew 4.3% from a year earlier, according to the statement.
