KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 19): Malaysia Airlines group CEO Capt Izham Ismail has apologised to passengers of flight MH122 following diversion of the aircraft to Australia's Alice Springs Airport on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Sydney.

Malaysia Airlines said in a statement today that the company "deeply regrets" the distress experienced by passengers of MH122.

Based on reports received, there was a loud bang heard from the left hand engine, Capt Izham said in the statement. This was followed by a warning indicator which appeared on the electronic aircraft monitoring system, prompting the captain to request cabin crew to prepare for a normal landing.

“I apologise to all our guests over the incident and understand the anxiety experienced. The operating captain and the rest of the crew were in control at all times and made an accurate decision to obtain technical assistance from the nearest airport before landing the aircraft safely in Alice Springs.

"There was no chaos reported in the cabin. I thank all crew onboard for managing the situation by the book and in the calmest way possible. The crew performed their duties well, in line with their extensive training, in managing such situations. Safety was at no time, compromised,” Capt Izham said.

Acccording to Malaysia Airlines' statement, all affected passengers were accommodated at four hotels close to Alice Springs Airport and were provided meals and transportation. Malaysia Airlines said the passengers will continue their journey to Kuala Lumpur today on flight MH148.

"The flight will depart from Melbourne and is scheduled to arrive in Alice Springs at 4:15pm, before departing Alice Springs at 5.45pm to Kuala Lumpur. The flight will arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 9.50pm on the same day.
