(May 15): Malakoff Corporation Bhd has denied its interest in buying power assets from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), hours after it was reported earlier today that the power producer was exploring potential buys, including from the debt-ridden state development fund.

The company issued a statement this evening to deny that it was in talks with 1MDB.

"Malakoff strongly denies being keen to acquire the power assets owned by 1MDB as reported by Bernama.

“The report is a misrepresentation as Malakoff wishes to state that the company is not in talks with 1MDB about any potential deals," it said.

Earlier today, news agencies Bernama and Reuters reported Malakoff chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Albar as telling reporters, "Yes, we are interested to grow the business whichever way it is as long it fits our profile and desires. Good return. We will look at it."

Malakoff had made a lukewarm debut on Malaysia's bourse today.

1MDB has been looking to list its Edra Global Energy unit but this has been delayed.

It withdrew its initial public offering submission from the Securities Commission Malaysia in March, and was reported by The Edge Financial Daily to be looking for a new promoter or a company that would take over Edra from 1MDB and then pursue the listing. – The Malaysian Insider
