KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) fell below the 1,070 level at midday June 17, in line with losses at most Asian markets.

The benchmark index was also dragged by losses at key blue chips including Genting Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, IOI Corporation Bhd and Public Bank.

At 12.30pm, the KLCI fell 0.52% or 5.54 points to 1,068.58. Turnover was 581.81 million shares valued at RM583.1 million. Losers led gainers by 397 to 165, while 208 counters traded unchanged.

Asian markets were mixed this morning following the overnight fall at Wall Street and weakening crude oil prices, indicating possible slowdown in demand.

Japan's Nikkei 225 added 0.64% to 9,814.98 while Taiwan's TAIEX Index rose 0.16% to 6,230.97 at midday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1.16% to 17,954.86, the Singapore Straits Times Index lost 0.81% to 2,269.66, the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.74% t0 2,755.51 while the South Korean Kospi shed 0.53% to 1,391.76.

At Bursa Malaysia, Concrete Engineering Products Bhd was the top loser at midday, falling 60 sen to RM3.20.

Genting fell 15 sen to RM5.65, Tenaga and KL Kepong Bhd lost 10 sen each to RM7.65 and RM11.90, IOI Corp and IGB Corporation Bhd fell 6 sen each to RM4.54 and RM1.68, respectively.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd fell 22 sen to RM3.38, Astro All Asia Networks Plc lost 14 sen to RM2.82, RHB Capital Bhd declined 8 sen to RM4.14, Public Bank lost 5 sen to RM8.85 while Axiata Group Bhd shed 3 sen to RM2.30.

Shell Refining Company (Federation of Malaya) Bhd was the top gainer, adding 20 sen to RM10.50.

Cycle & Carriage Bintang Bhd added 12 sen to RM2.42, Toyo Ink Group Bhd, DiGi.Com Bhd, Tanjong Plc and United Plantations Bhd gained 10 sen each to RM1.35, RM21.90, RM13.60 and RM12.80, respectively.

Other gainers included Aeon Credit Service (M) Bhd, Berjaya Land Bhd and Emico Holdings Bhd.

Scomi Group Bhd was the most actively traded counter with 36.04 million shares done at midday. The stock lost 2 sen to 80 sen.

Other actively traded stocks included KNM Group Bhd, Ramunia Holdings Bhd, Tebrau Teguh Bhd, Emico, Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd and Mulpha International Bhd.

Light, sweet crude oil fell 5 cents per barrel to US$70.42 as at 12.35pm today, while crude palm oil futures for August delivery added RM1 to RM2,401 per tonne at midday.
