(May 8): Lim Kit Siang today backed Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to be opposition leader, a day after the PKR president won the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat.

The DAP parliamentary leader also urged Pakatan Rakyat (PR) – whose image was battered by public discord between its three parties – to regain the confidence and hopes of the electorate.

He warned that the future for the opposition pact was dim if they failed to regain the trust of Malaysians who had voted for them in the 13th general election two years ago.

"Dr Wan Azizah’s solid and impressive win in Permatang Pauh paves the way for her to be re-elected as the parliamentary opposition leader," he said in a statement today.

He said Dr Wan Azizah's victory is a sign that the future lies with inclusive politics instead of sectarian or exclusive politics bound to any single race or religion.

"A lot of political pyrotechnics were staged during the Permatang Pauh which attracted media publicity and frenzy.

But the results showed that voters are more level-headed and have common sense than to be swayed by such histrionics and media hype," Lim added. – The Malaysian Insider
