PUTRAJAYA (Jan 11): The judiciary has zero tolerance for any form of corrupt practices and will take swift action in accordance with the law, said Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum.

"One solemn declaration we make here is to uphold the rule of law and our zero tolerance [for] any form of corruption and judicial interference whether internal or external, political or otherwise, in the execution of our judicial duties," he told an audience of some 500 judges, lawyers, academics and reporters at the Opening of the Legal Year 2019 here today.

According to Malanjum, the judiciary remains and will remain steadfast in upholding its independence.

"We welcome information if any of such (corruption) occur. I can assure you that swift action will be taken in accordance with the law," he added.

Meanwhile, Malanjum said the three branches of the government — executive, legislative and judiciary — should work together and respect each other's boundaries.

"Being a branch and being independent does not mean that the judiciary must act at all times as checks on the other branches (the legislature and the executive) of the government," he added.
