PETALING JAYA (May 24): A New York judge had ordered a 30-year-old man to move out of his parents’ house in the US, reported several news outlets.

The legal victory for couple Christina and Mark Rotondo culminates a fraught few months where they had served five eviction notices starting Feb 2 and even offered their son Michael Rotondo US$1,100 (RM4,377) to move out of their home in Camillus, near Syracuse.

Michael had moved back with his parents eight years ago after losing his job, and claimed that he was never expected to help out with chores and contribute to household expenses and maintenance.

In their letters, the couple had given him up to March 15 to move out, failing which a legal enforcement procedure will be “instituted immediately”.

One letter from his parents to the college-educated but unemployed man dated Feb 18 read: “There are jobs available even for those with a poor work history like you. Get one — you have to work!”

They had also advised him to sell some his belongings, which include a stereo, tools, weapons and a broken-down Volkswagen Passat, to scrap together funds to move out.

Michael, who occupies a bedroom in the two-storey house, described the relationship between him and his parents as very strained — they do not interact inside his parents’ home.

"After a while it just kind of beats itself down to where there's nothing left," he said.

Justice Donald Greenwood had ruled in favour of the couple, calling Michael’s demand that he be given a six-month notice “outrageous”.
