KUALA LUMPUR: Roads heading into a few hot seats in Johor saw a surge in traffic after working hours on the eve of polling day for Malaysia’s 14th general election.

Traffic was busiest heading towards Pulai, Tebrau and Pasir Gudang, where traffic was 95.89%, 63.12% and 28.21% heavier that the respective average daily volumes.

Incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) members of parliament (MPs), many of whom are long-standing and hold ministerial positions, are being challenged by both new and old faces.

Pulai is being contested by four different candidates including incumbent MP and deputy home minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, as well as Salahuddin Ayub of PKR, who lost narrowly in the last general election. The other two candidates are independent candidate Yap Keng Tak and PAS’ Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya.

In Tebrau, the seat was won on a margin by BN's Khoo Soo Seang against PKR's Choong Shiau Yoon in GE13. The three-cornered fight for GE14 are between PKR's Steven Choong, BN's Hou Kok Chung and PAS' Ustaz Abdullah Husin.

Meanwhile, current Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin will be vying for the Pasir Gudang seat against PKR’s Hassan Abdul Karim, Ab Aziz Abdullah of PAS and independent candidate Chee Jock.

Other seats in the state that saw a pick-up in traffic after 6pm were Bakri, where PKR contestant Yeo Bee Yin, formerly Damansara Utama state assemblywoman will be squaring off against Koh Chon Chai from BN and Zarul Salleh from PAS. Hourly traffic towards the area rose 4.87% at 7pm compared to little or no traffic in earlier hours.

In Johor Bahru, traffic was up 25.63% against the average daily volume. The constituency has also been identified as a hot seat, for which incumbent member of parliament (MP) Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad, who is also chairman of Felda, is being challenged by Johor Bharu PKR chief, Akmal Nasir.
