KUALA LUMPUR (July 24): The Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia (JCI) and the Malaysian Economic Association (MEA) will for the first time be co-organising a series of seminars themed “Revisiting the New Economic Model – Lags and prospects” to discuss the state of the Malaysian economy and the policy reforms needed to increase investor confidence.

The JCI-MEA seminar series will take place in the form of four sessions from August 1 to October 31 in both Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The event will be open to the public and admission is free.

MEA deputy president Datuk Latifah Merican Cheong said the parties hope to attract around 200 participants and so far, they have received 100 sign ups.

“We have decided to set two seminars in Penang as it is the second largest city in the country and we want to target a different crowd and gather different perspectives,” added Latifah.

“With 2020 closing in, this joint JCI-MEA seminar series on the new economic model provides a timely assessment of the progress towards achieving the 2020 goals of a high income society that is inclusive and environmentally friendly and sustainable,” said JCI President Professor Woo Wing Thye.

Woo added that the purpose of the seminar was also spurred by the recently formed Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) initiative by the government, which JCI and MEA both hope to be able to contribute ideas and solutions based on the outcome of their event.

“We see it as an opportunity to tackle [national] issues as there is not yet a proper document in place for TN50. We hope to synthesise the talking points raised and propose it to the government,” said Woo.
