KUALA LUMPUR: The government yesterday appointed former World Bank senior adviser Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Bakar as the new Treasury secretary-general effective immediately.

Ismail, 58, takes over from Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, who was transferred from the ministry of finance (MoF) to the Public Service Department and whose service contract ends tomorrow.

Ismail graduated from the University of Hull in the UK with a doctorate in business management, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said in a statement.

Ismail has vast experience in economic and currency management, having served in the civil service for 32 years beginning at the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service (PTD) in January 1986, said Ali.

Ismail once served as a director for national budget in the state budget office within the MoF. His other previous responsibilities included being secretary-general at the agriculture and agro-based industries ministry and the transport ministry.

“I believe with the knowledge, experience and credibility exemplified by Ismail, he can perform his responsibility effectively and continue MoF’s vision as the strategic leader of financial and economic successes to ensure sustainable growth for the prosperity of the nation and her people,” said Ali.
