KUALA LUMPUR: Racial harmony and the independence of institutions must be maintained for the well-being of the people, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan said yesterday.

In his royal address on the occasion of his 70th  birthday at the Istana Besar Seri Menanti, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir said he was “keenly aware that my people have different cultural and religious backgrounds” and called for everyone to appreciate these differences and live together in peace, harmony and mutual respect.

The ruler also emphasised the importance of good governance.

“The principles of good governance — integrity, public trust, transparency and honesty — are extolled by all religious teachings and cultural traditions,” he said. “These values form the basis of our Rukun Negara that ought to be championed by all, citizens and leaders alike.”

Tuanku Muhriz said that those in positions of authority should take action towards defending, protecting and guaranteeing the independence of the national institutions of law, justice and administration.

This, he stressed, also applies to the process in which the upcoming general election is to be conducted.

The ruler also said the state’s development should be inclusive and enjoyed by every district. “The fruits of development must be enjoyed by people in the towns and rural areas.”
