KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 6): It is inevitable for the government to put in some effort and utilise its resources in order to recoup at least some of the massive losses from the multi billion-ringgit scandal plaguing 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking outside the Dewan Rakyat today, the de-facto Pakatan Harapan leader said the scandal is colossal enough to deserve such attention by the government, and that it should be pursued amid realisation that it will take a long time to resolve.

"For example, [the scrutiny of] Goldman Sachs [which earned huge fees from servicing 1MDB] is still on-going and Jho Low is still not found,” he said.

The case, Anwar added, cannot be closed despite views of certain quarters that the government has been grappling with the issue for too long.

“Such a colossal problem requires some of the government's resources and efforts to at least gain some of the losses,” he said.

Malaysia has started to take legal actions against alleged perpetrators of the 1MDB fiasco, in which billions of ringgit has been alleged to be missing and misused for personal gains.

The case is being investigated in at least six countries, with the latest legal actions taken by the US government against Jho Low and other associated bankers.
