FundedByMe has become the first major crowdfunding platform to allow the use of bitcoins in fundraising. The Swedish-based platform will host an equity-crowdfunding campaign for Safello, a European bitcoin retailer that facilitates trading of the cryptocurrency.

According to its press release, FundedByMe will run a 45-day pilot project starting today. The funding goal is set at US$500,000.

Safello CEO Frank Schuil says fundraising using bitcoins is not new. “We know that many of our customers will be interested to invest if they can do so with bitcoins. As a bitcoin company, we need to support this. For customers who are already verified with Safello, this will be the easiest way to invest."

FundedByMe CEO Daniel Daboczy hopes this campaign will have something to offer for the many of FundedByMe investors, who are usually early adopters, as well as for bitcoin users, who are familiar with novel inventions. Digital Currency Group will be the anchor investor in Safello’s campaign.

“There will probably be many investors wanting to allocate their money, especially since it is anchored by lead investor Digital Currency Group, which incubates and seeds bitcoin and blockchain technology-related companies.

“[Also] CEO Barry Silbert has been the most active seed investor in the digital currency industry, with over 50 investments in 15 different countries. But I am curious about how it works out with bitcoin investors.”

FundedByMe is Europe’s fastest growing crowdfunding platform. It has achieved many milestones, including launching loan-based crowdfunding and having more than 50,000 investors on the platform.
