KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 2): The Election Commission (EC) dismissed today, a rumour that the 14th General Election (GE14) will be held in October.

In a statement, the EC said it is aware of a video that has been making its rounds on social media by unscrupulous parties since yesterday.

"We would like to emphasise that allegations of the commission carrying out the GE14 in October is totally untrue and is confusing the public.

“In fact, the video is a simulation exercise by the EC staff,” the statement added.

To ensure no party tries to tarnish its reputation, the EC said it will monitor and evaluate all unauthorised news uploaded on any social media site.

The EC said its top management is now weighing the option of lodging a police report against those who spread false news on social media.

The commission was commenting on a video recording purportedly showing its officers at a pre-election briefing. An unnamed announcer in the 39-second video reportedly said early voting will be held on Oct 11 this year, and that voting day will be held two days later, on Oct 13.

GE14 must be held by August 2018.
