KUALA LUMPUR: The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd was yesterday awarded RM11.26 million in compensatory damages for its loss of revenue as a result of the unlawful suspension of The Edge Malaysia weekly and The Edge Financial Daily in 2015.

High Court deputy registrar Norazlin Othman also awarded an interest of 4%, to run from July 27, 2015 until the full settlement.

The home ministry had on that date suspended the two publications for three months over their reports on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue.

The order was revoked on Sept 21, 2015 by the High Court, allowing The Edge’s judicial review application. The home minister’s appeal against the order to the Court of Appeal was dismissed on Aug 30, 2016.

Upon further appeal to the Federal Court, the apex court ruled on Aug 9 last year that The Edge could claim damages from the home minister for losses incurred due to the suspension.

The matter was then remitted to the High Court for assessment of damages, carried out in chambers yesterday.
