KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 21): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will make a two-leg working visit to the UK from today to next Tuesday (Sept 25) and from Sept 29 to Oct 1.

In a statement today, the ministry of foreign affairs said his visit is held consecutively with his visit to New York to attend the 73rd United Nations General Assembly. It will be his first visit to a European country, since his resumption of the prime minister’s position on May 10.

"The visit is expected to strengthen the bond of friendship and cooperation between the two countries," the statement added.

The Malaysian leader will be accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, as well as officials from the ministry.

The prime minister is scheduled to visit some high technology companies in London, namely Dyson and Lotus Cars.

The premier is also expected to deliver talks at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies on “Challenges of Good Governance in the Muslim World” and at the Chatham House on “Future Democracy in Asia”.

"In realising the government’s aim to boost foreign direct investments into the country, the prime minister will also be meeting key investors, international capital market analysts and potential new investors based in the UK and the European Union," the ministry said.

During the visit, Dr Mahathir is also expected to attend a briefing session on police and public sector reforms to learn about the effective reform agenda of the UK. In addition, he will be attending an interview on the television programme “HARDtalk” on BBC.

He will also host a dialogue session and hi-tea with Malaysian citizens residing in the UK. It is expected that a total of 500 Malaysians, including students, will join this session.
