(June 15): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has brushed off Datuk Seri Najib Razak's assurance that the 1Malaysian Development Bhd (1MDB) crisis can be resolved by the end of the year.

Dr Mahathir said he was not confident this could be achieved, adding that he would continue to talk about everything that went wrong with 1MDB.

"I'm not confident because things have gone wrong, there is no money," Dr Mahathir told reporters after witnessing the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and licence agreement between Proton, Suzuki and DRB Hicom at Proton Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam today..

"It's okay that he wants to do it, (but) in the mean time we have to talk about what went wrong."

Dr Mahathir also said he was not attacking Najib but only highlighting the irregularities in 1MDB.

"I'm not attacking him, I'm just exposing things that are wrong, I don't complain when things are fine.

"I supported him back then until he won, albeit a small margin."

Dr Mahathir also said Datuk Ahmad Maslan could say whatever he wanted to, after the deputy finance minister's remark that Dr Mahathir's actions could negatively affect the country's economy and image.

The former prime minister has been relentless in attacking Najib over 1MDB and calling for his resignation.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the Proton Holdings Bhd executive chairman, earlier witnessed the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and licence agreement between Proton, DRB-Hicom Bhd and Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The new agreement would see a long term strategic collaboration and partnership between the three companies.

In a press conference earlier, Dr Mahathir was optimistic that the new collaboration would be successful compared to other MoUs signed by Proton and other carmakers.

"Now I'm responsible because I'm supposed to be the executive chairman.

"I think I'll make things happen."

The collaboration will allow the national carmaker to have access to the models, platforms, powertrain and automotive technology of Suzuki who will then provide the specific technical assistance for the products and scope selected. – The Malaysian Insider
