The 11-day campaign period has come to an end and Malaysians are preparing to head to the polls. Many voters were still en-route to their home constituencies past 12am today. At 10pm last night, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Najib Razak took to different channels to address their constituents and the country for one final time. Tun Dr. Mahathir took to live-streaming his address from his constituency in Langkawi to all major ceramah locations across the country, while Datuk Seri Najib spoke in his constituency of Pekan, Pahang, and relied on official media channels to broadcast his address.

As both leaders addressed the nation, many voters were still on the road, with extreme congestion observed along major Northbound and Eastbound routes. Between 8:30pm and 11:30pm on Tuesday, traffic conditions between the entry toll from Johor Bahru to the North-South Expressway and the Senai toll plaza worsened, with travel times an average of 360% higher than the usual day (during the same time period). Drivers took an average of 1 hour to clear the 14km route; it takes 14 minutes on a usual day. As the Klang Valley exodus carried on, travel times between the NKVE and Rawang increased to almost 290% of typical traffic, while on the North-South Expressway between Slim River and Sungkai, traffic conditions were 260% above the usual.

Between midnight and 4:30am today, traffic conditions eased along major exit points from the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. Traffic picked up as voters approached their home constituencies. Traffic headed towards Bentong and Permatang Pauh continued to remained congested until the early hours of the morning. Eastbound traffic remains congested, due to lower capacity of expressways and volume of traffic headed towards Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu.

We’ve also designed an interactive chart for selected hot and marginal seats characterised by net traffic increased since 7pm on Monday and through Wednesday morning.

We will be back for a final mid-day update as voters make last-minute arrangements and many are already en-route to their polling stations.
