(May 12): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should do the right thing and seek a vote of confidence at the Dewan Rakyat next Monday given mounting criticism against debt ridden state fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), DAP said today.

Party parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang also said although there has been suggestions for Pakatan Rakyat MPs to table a motion of no-confidence against the prime minister, it will unlikely to get through.

Lim, in a statement today, said this was compounded by the problem that it would not get the support of all the Pakatan Rakyat MPs.

This is believed to be in reference to PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who had voiced his support for Najib to remain as prime minister.

Lim said that although there has never been a vote of no-confidence tabled in Dewan Rakyat before, they had however been a precedent for a vote of confidence.

He recalled that such move was made in the Dewan Rakyat in January 1976, by then Tun Hussein Onn when he became Malaysia’s third prime minister after the death of his predecessor, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Lim also said that no one really believed the drama following the Umno Supreme Council meeting yesterday that “all is well in Umno”.

"Najib should seek a motion of confidence from Parliament on Monday to prove to the nation and the world that he still enjoys the confidence of the majority of MPs in the country.

"Is Najib bold enough to seek such a vote of confidence from Parliament or he is fearful that an accident might occur and he might lose a vote of confidence on Monday and suddenly cease to be prime minister?”

Najib had said last night that the Umno Supreme Council expressed renewed support for the president and the deputy president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He added that the Supreme Council also wanted the president, deputy president, the council and all Umno leaders to unite as a team to face all the challenges and take positive action to strengthen the party and Barisan Nasional’s position among the people. – The Malaysian Insider
