KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): Comintel Corp Bhd announced that it will be applying to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority for a date to officially commence the commercial operation of its mini biomass power plant in Kuang, Selangor.

Comintel said the application for a commercial operation date (COD) will be submitted by its 70%-owned unit Comintel Green Technologies Sdn Bhd, while the other 30% is held via its wholly-owned Comintel Sdn Bhd.

Comintel said its application to SEDA for a COD was after it had on May 18, 2017 passed an initial test and inspection by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), a state-owned electricity firm.

"After the receipt of COD from SEDA Malaysia, feed-in-tariff (FIT) with TNB will commence," the technology and telecommunications solutions firm said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

"Upon commencement of the FIT, Comintel Green Technologies will begin to generate revenue and is expected to contribute positively towards the financial performance of the group in the future," Comintel added.

Comintel's plan to commence the mini power plant operations dated back to as far as 2013.

On Nov 15, 2013, Comintel Green Technologies had inked a renewable energy power purchase agreement with TNB, which will see it supplying around 11 kilovolt of electricity to the state-owned electricity firm for 21 years after it received the nod to commence commercial operations.

Located in Kuang — near Gombak — Comintel's mini biomass power plant uses municipal solid waste as well as municipal garden waste in the form of wood and plant-based residues such as palm oil dry fruit bunch, palm kernel shells, wood chips, sugar cane pulp and refuse-derived fuel as its feedstock.

The mini biomass plant is capable of generating two megawatt of electricity per hour.

Shares in Comintel, which was listed on the Main Market since August 2014, fell 1 sen or 1.27% to close at 78 sen today, for a market capitalisation of RM109.2 million.
