KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 16): CIMB Group Holdings Bhd said investigation into the loss of magnetic tapes containing back-up customer data is still ongoing.

"The investigation is still ongoing and it's premature at this stage for us to make further statements on the matter," it said in a statement today.

“We are, however, confident that heightened security measures and strengthened internal processes will maintain the safety of our customers' transactions," it added.

It also reiterated that customers' authentication data such as personal identification numbers (PINs), passwords or credit card CVV (card verification value) numbers are also safe.

CIMB was responding to a Bernama report, which quoted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun as saying that initial investigations showed that the loss of the tapes was due to possible negligence on the part of the bank's staff. He also ruled out sabotage as the cause.

He said the issue is an internal problem at CIMB, and that the bank had taken necessary measures to beef up security and would issue a statement on it.

According to the report, Mohamad Fuzi also said the police would step in if the bank needed their help, and that such a probe would be conducted by Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crimes Department.

On Nov 13, CIMB announced that the magnetic tapes containing backup data were lost during routine operations.

At the time, it said it had tightened security measures following the incident, and that there was no evidence that data on the tapes had been compromised.

CIMB shares slid eight sen or 1.33% to close at RM5.92 today, for a market capitalisation of RM54.61 billion.
