KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 19): Malaysian shares may today take their cue from news the US' Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 23,000 points for the first time overnight on Wednesday.

In Malaysia, FBM KLCI constituent YTL Corp Bhd shares may also be in the spotlight today after YTL Corp said YTL Group founder Tan Sri Dr Yeoh Tiong Lay passed away peacefully on Wednesday. He was 88.

"It is with deep sadness that we inform that the late Tan Sri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay, executive chairman of YTL Corp and YTL Power International Bhd, passed away peacefully on 18 October 2017," YTL Corp said in a statement on Wednesday.

Today, Malaysian markets resume trading following the Deepavali holiday on Wednesday.

Overnight, US shares rose to record closing highs. Reuters reported that the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 23,000 for the first time on Wednesday, driven by a jump in IBM after it hinted at a return to revenue growth. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also hit record closing highs.

It was reported that the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 160.16 points or 0.7 percent to end at 23,157.6, the S&P 500 gained 1.9 points or 0.07 percent to 2,561.26 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.56 point or 0.01 percent to 6,624.22.

At Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday, the KLCI closed 5.38 points lower at 1,748.99 points.
