KUALA LUMPUR: Blue chips extended their losses for the second day this week, with the 30-stock FBM KLCI in the red at midday on July 7 while the broader market was slightly firmer, with gains in lower lines and penny stocks, despite the lower volume.

A foreign research house said putting lacklustre earnings growth together with a market price-to-earnings (P/E) of 14.7 times and 13 times 2009F and 2010F earnings, the local stock market’s valuations look challenging next to peer markets and sectors across the region.

“Hence, investor interest in the Malaysian market as it stands is unlikely to be stoked purely by earnings momentum and/or valuations alone. As in many countries across Asia, the biggest potential catalyst is probably political progress or, in Malaysia's case, deregulation of the economy,” it said.
