KUALA LUMPUR: Gains in banking and plantation stocks lifted the FBM KLCI 0.28% or 3.43 points higher at midday to 1,233.52, in line with the positive sentiment at regional markets.

Trading volume however was relatively thin with 372.78 million shares valued at RM579 million. Gainers trailed losers by 261 to 275, while 244 counters traded unchanged.

At the regional markets, the Shanghai Composite Index jumped 3.84% to 2,886.20, Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 1.28% to 9,958.31, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 0.11% to 21,576.30, the South Korean Kospi rose 1.70% to 1,642.88, Taiwan's TAIEX Index added 0.66% to 7,552.57 and Singapore's Straits Times Index was up 0.18% to 2,655.65.

Crude palm oil futures for the third-month delivery rose RM25 to RM2,057 per tonne at 12.20pm while crude oil fell 54 cents to US$71.15 per barrel.

At the Bursa Malaysia, the top gainer at noon was CIMB, which added 22 sen to RM12.34.

Hong Leong Bank rose 11 sen to RM6.73, while Public Bank and RHB Capital added 8 sen each to RM10.48 and RM5.22, respectively.

Among plantation stocks, Batu Kawan added 13 sen to RM9.55, Kulim rose 11 sen to RM7.50 while KLK was up 8 sen to RM14.08.

Top Glove continued its impressive run and gained 12 sen to RM8.27. Genting added 12 sen to RM7.32, Ta Ann and Magna were up 10 sen each to RM4.70 and RM2.17, while the CIMB-launched call warrants on Wynn Macau Ltd also rose.

Among the top losers at midday, Tanjong fell 16 sen to RM15.60, Paragon lost 13.5 sen to 31.5 sen, BAT down 12 sen to RM44.80. MISC, DFZ, Toyo Ink and AIRB fell 10 sen each to RM9, RM4.25, RM1.40 and RM1.08, respectively.

KNM was the most actively traded stock with 27.8 million shares done. The counter added half a sen to 80.5 sen.

Other actively traded stocks included Time, Genting Malaysia, Green Packet and Genting.
